Let’s Talk About Carbs: Myths and Facts
Have you ever heard someone say they’re quitting carbs? It’s a pretty common phrase, especially when people are focused on losing weight or getting fit. But is it actually good for your body?
All Carbs Are Not Created Equal
Carbohydrates come in a couple of different forms: there are simple carbs and complex carbs.
Simple carbs are quick-energy sources, found in things like canned fruit, candy, and white bread. These should be your “treat” carbs. It’s okay to have them, but they won’t support our body through a whole CrossFit workout.
Complex carbs are long-lasting energy sources found in foods like whole grains, beans, and nuts. They break down slowly, keeping our blood sugar steady and giving us fuel for those heavy lifting days.
One type of carb isn’t necessarily better than the other; they just do different things.
Carbs Are Part of a Balanced Diet
Our bodies need carbs just like they need protein and fat. Carb-heavy foods also often have important vitamins and minerals. Think about potatoes: they’re full of vitamin C, vitamin B6, and potassium.
The moral of the story? Quitting carbs altogether might not be the best route. Instead, eating a balanced diet with a mixture of different kinds of carbs can help to support your CrossFit goals.
